April 4, 2017
  • Dr. Frances Gooden gave an update from State MAEN
  • Working to increase advocacy at state level
  • National Dropout Prevention
  • Will have four breakouts per session at the state MAEN Conference
  • Encouraged members to register for the state MAEN Conference, July 17-18
  • Darren Myers presented information about the OTC Middle College program
  • Program for 11th and 12th-grade students
  • Have guest speakers and field trips
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters – mentorship with students
  • Accept 150 students; 20 students per class
  • Students can get within 50 credits of earning their associates degree
  • Program intended for the unmotivated, at-risk students who need independence in their learning
  • OTC is only middle college in Missouri
  • Most alternative schools represented use the handbook from their home high school
  • Stockton and some other alternative schools have a separate contract or handbook supplement used along with the high school handbook
  • Discussion of rewards systems and incentives for good behavior, attendance, etc.
  • Many districts allow students to finish (graduate) early
  • Cook food on Thursday and eat it Friday (Aurora)
  • Finley River School (Ozark) uses PBIS – set goals for academics, attendance, and behavior
  • Field trips, student store, etc.
  • Service learning and community involvement
  • Seneca students volunteer in elementary buildings
  • Camdenton students volunteer in the community (Success Program)
